Self Discovery – a pilgrimage to you

So just before we begin I want to congratulate for having the courage to take this journey.

Just like the picture on the right your future, all of it, is stretched out before you.   All you have to do is take the first step, get on that train and ride it to the very end.  Go!  Find yourself.  Every thought you have, every choice you make determines where you go.  You may not be able to see what the end of the journey looks like but you know its there and you know that it is the adventure of a lifetime.

Define Self Discovery

Self discovery, by definition, is the act or process of gaining knowledge or understanding of your abilities, character and feelings – Merriam-Webster.    Wikipedia has this to say, : the journey of self discovery is travel, pilgrimage, or series of events whereby a person attempts to determine how they feel, personally, about spiritual issues or priorities, rather than following the opinions of family, friends, neighbourhood or peer pressure.   So for us in terms of our journey together it is the process, the series of things that we will do to determine who we are, what things are important to us, what we like and what makes us happy.

Therefore self discovery is about taking time for yourself, to focus on the things that are important to you.   The journey is as individual as the  people making it and no two people approach it in the same way.  It is a way to feel empowered, in control, energised, happy and clearer about ALL of you.  Everyone, whether they know it or not, wants to improve the quality of their lives.   To be more self confident, in control and empowered by their choices.   You deserve to be happy and to make choices that create a reality more truly reflective of your priorities.  A mind, body and soul journey to laying the foundation and structure for your new life.   One part frightening, one part exciting and a whole lot of ‘OMG’ am I ready for this, you will love it.

First things first – Knowing where you are?

A couple of years ago in a workshop that we ran with our kids we were given the following puzzle.  If we were adrift in a boat in the middle of the ocean how would we get back to shore.   How would you answer?  It was a trick question that most of us got wrong.

Life is like that trick question.  Before you can move in any direction with purpose you have to know where you are starting from.   It is no use rowing if you don’t know where you are in relation to where you want to be.

To get the life that you want and need to be happy, you have to know who you are.  Do you feel like something is not right or missing?   Are you watching life you by?  Is your life making you feel frustrated, exhausted and lonely, even in a crowded room? Do you want to live a life that is more authentic?  Does your life and how you are living it reflect your values and priorities?

I challenge you to answer the following questions honestly?

        • Do your really know yourself?
        • What is important to you?
        • What do you like?
        • What makes you happy?

How did you go?  These are things that we generally do not think about.   We are so caught up in just living our everyday lives.   Going from one day to the next on automatic pilot and going through the motions.

If you are anything like me, your mind just seems to get so filled up with ‘others stuff’.  Yup that is what I meant to say ‘others stuff’.   It means other peoples ‘stuff’.   You spend so much of your time being everything else to everybody else that you totally forget about yourself.   As a daughter, cousin, niece, wife and mother I know exactly how easily this can happen.

Our adventure begins here

The following concepts are the ones that we will be exploring together.   They will help us develop a more comprehensive picture of ourselves.

Know yourself and what matters – to do this you need to know what you value the most .   When you live a life that is a reflection of these values you will be happier.   You will feel more in control and empowered.

Know what your here for and what you want – Your life purpose?  What you are here for?   Doing things that make you feel energised and excited.   This is how you know if what you are doing is your life purpose.   It may be one thing or lots of things.   When you feel energised and you can’t wait to do something it is a sure sign the heart is invested in what you are doing.   This is what you are meant to do

Forget the past and let go your fear – When you finally learn what makes you happy things might need to change.   This could be one of the most frightening things in your life because status quo is known to you.  It is sometimes easier to stay with what you know.    The unknown can be frightening.  You wonder if you can do it.   You wonder what will happen now.

Believe in yourself and know you deserve it – When you are doing what you are meant to do it can feel self indulgent and easy.   This is how it is meant to be.   Enjoy it.   You deserve it.   I have left my job and started a new career.  I feel so much happier and I am enjoying every minute of my change in career.

Community of Support  The process of self discovery is always easier when you share it with friends.   Support and encouragement can sometimes be the difference between success or failure.   Having someone to talk to, bounce ideas off and keep you moving forward.   I could not have taken this new path without the support of my husband and children.

It is never to late to start this journey.   Whatever stage of life you are at you will truly find some benefit from this process.   Knowing the real you and building a better relationship with yourself can not help but be good for you.  Having your values as the centre of what you think and do, not an add on, enables a life of greatness.   That is who you were born to be.   I know you will be amazed by what you learn and so proud of who you are.

I totally recognize myself so well in all this. For many, many years I just lived on images and phantasies thinking that I knew myself perfectly well and in reality I just lived in an imaginary world. Then, after several years of psychotherapy I learned more about who I am and what I want.
The therapy is over since many years but the process still goes on. I feel like I am learning more and more about myself, what I need and what is important to me. I believe this is really the basis for everything because if you don’t know who you are and what you need you can not make the right choices in life.
Thank you for pointing all of this out again.

Hi Jojo, thank you for this support. I have been so happy to talk to people who are in the same space as me. I have sometimes found it hard because I thought I was walking this road by myself. It can be quite isolating.

Hello and thanks for sharing, this is a very great post.many people are walking around and don’t know who they are or why they are here. And i believe that, that is one of the sadest things in life, not to take stock of yourself. But when we discover who we are then we can enjoy life, for it takes on a whole new meaning. Thanks for sharing, you post is really great and filled with awesome information, that offers good help.

I’m on a pilgrimage of self discovery in my own life and have been for years now. The discoveries are amazing! I never thought that much of myself because I always held in all this guilt and shame.

I began to learn we can’t really care about other people’s stuff if we can’t first get our priorities together. The road is a long one. At least for me it has been but the great discoveries are better than most people can find in ten lifetimes if they never take the journey.

Thank you so much for this. I find the journey of self discovery quite lonely sometimes and love talking to people who share it with me.

Good Luck on your journey and hope to see and hear from you in the future.

Thank you for this overview about starting on the road to self-discovery. It’s an exciting sort of journey, I’ve found, and it can take some surprising turns.

The best part is that you are in charge of the trip you make. You get to define your own parameters and you choose to pack your own bags and, best of all, once you learn how, you can change the direction as you like.

    It’s all good….

      Hi Netta,

I agree that the journey has a lot of turns but this is the fun part. Creating you own reality.

      Good Luck
